Purpose: To analyze the clinical and radiologic results following cementless total hip arthroplasties using Harris-Galante prosthesis. .
Materials and Methods: Clinical and radiological analyses were performed on 37 patients (45cases) who had been received cementless total hip arthroplasties using Harris-Galante prosthesis. The average duration of follow up was 102 months.
Result: The Harris hip score improved from 47 points preoperatively to 90 points at the most recent follow-up. A radiolucent line around the acetabula component was seen in 10 cases (22.2%), although cup loosening developed in only one case (2.2%). A radiolucent line around the femoral stem was seen in 20 cases (44.4%), however unstable fixation was not found upon final follow up. Osteolysis was found around the acetabular component in 6 cases (13.3%) and the femoral stem in 7 cases (15.6%). Revision operation was performed in 4 cases (8.9%) due to the dissociation of the polyethylene liner associated with a failure of the locking mechanism and cup loosening.
Conclusion: The design of the locking mechanism of the Harris-Galante porous coated cup should be modified to prevent the dissociation of polyethylene liner and periodic follow-up is essential in cases showing progression of osteolysis around the prosthesis.
